About

Karen Aitken and John Hodsdon

Creators of Classroom Mastery

Veteran elementary educator Karen Aitken and co-author John Hodsdon built Classroom Mastery so K–5 teachers can replace frustration with a classroom culture where students listen, own their choices, resolve conflict, and take pride in their work.

The core belief is simple: when students learn to manage themselves, teachers get to teach — and children grow into capable adolescents and adults.

The mission

Make classroom management trainable, humane, and repeatable.

Field-tested

Born from real elementary rooms and refined through seminars, coaching, and teacher feedback.

Student dignity first

Instructional discipline separates the child from the behavior. Reflection beats humiliation.

Teacher sustainability

Burnout often starts as a management problem. Solving it protects careers and kids.

What we stand for

Self-management is the curriculum under the curriculum.

  • Relationships unlock discipline. Students accept guidance from adults who clearly know and care for them — without crossing into peer friendship.
  • Practice beats posters. Theme contests, countdowns, I-Messages, and reflection sheets train habits the way any skill is trained: repeat, coach, improve.
  • Responsibility is teachable. Credibility, accountability, and work ethic are not slogans. They are classroom muscles.
